Puffy Hot Pad Free Crochet Pattern
Bring some colors to your kitchen with this easy puff stitch crochet hot pad. I called it a hot pad because of its size and qualities, but you can also use it as a dishcloth or a gentle scrubber. Use your favorite colors of yarn (scraps will be perfect) and enjoy watching colorful bobbles and stripes emerge. The useful loop in the corner makes it even more accessible and easier to store.

About The Project
This crochet pattern is worked in rows using single crochets and puff stitches. It is easy enough for beginners to make. Textural stitches add to the scraping qualities, so you can use it as a dishcloth, as well as create enough thickness for it to be a hot pad.

Materials and Tools
- Two skeins (different colors) of a sport-weight cotton yarn or cotton blend. I recommend yarns such as Gazzal Baby Cotton, Stenli Eco Love, YarnArt Jeans, Drops Safran. Remember NOT to use acrylic yarn because it melts in contact with heat. Cotton, linen, or bamboo are the best options.
- 4 mm crochet hook
- scissors
- yarn needle (optional)
This hot pad measures about ~20×20 cm (~7.8×7.8 inches).
Keep in mind that when you choose a different yarn weight, you have to use a corresponding hook size. The final product may look different and will have different measurements.
Stitches and Abbreviations
- ch – chain stitch
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- puff – puff stitch (how to crochet puff stitch – tutorial below)
- C1 – color 1
- C2 – color 2
- st – stitch
How to Crochet Puff Stitch
- Yarn over, insert the crochet hook in the stitch, pull up a loop.
- Yarn over again, insert the hook in the same stitch, and repeat until you have 9 in total: your working loop, 4 yarn overs, and 4 pulled stitches.
- Grab the yarn and pull it through all 9 loops at once. This is your puff stitch.
Pattern Notes
- The foundation chain is a multiple of 4 + 5. You can modify the size of this hot pad using this calculation.
- The number in brackets (#) tells you how many stitches there are in each row.
- 1 ch at the beginning of the round doesn’t count as a stitch and isn’t included in the overall stitch count.

The Hot Pad
Start
29 ch
Row 1 (color 1)
1 ch, 1 sc in each st (29)
Row 2 (Color 2)
1 ch, 2 sc, 1 puff, *3 sc, 1 puff* x 6, 2 sc
Row 3 (Color 2)
1 ch, 1 sc in each st (29)
Row 4 (Color 1)
1 ch, 4 sc, 1 puff, *3 sc, 1 puff* x 5, 4 sc
Repeat rows 1-4 eight times. Row 3 should be your last repeat. End on a row of single crochets.
Secure any yarn ends on the sides – we will crochet over them when adding the edging.
Edging
Round 1
You can start in any corner of your choice. Chain 1 and make 2 single crochets there. Next, make 1 sc in every stitch along all sides, and 2 sc in every corner. Repeat all around until you reach the corner you started in. When you do, close the round with a slip stitch.
Change the hook size to a bigger one if your stitches are too tight. Crochet over the remaining yarn ends as you go.
Setting up the Loop
Chain 10-15 stitches (or however many you want) to create a loop in one corner. Attach it in the same corner with a slip stitch, in the first stitch on the side.
Round 2
Chain 1, make 1 sc in each stitch and 3 sc in every corner. When you reach the loop, make single crochets inside the loop, all around the chain (not in the individual stitches), and slip stitch into the first stitch of this round.
Cut the yarn, secure it, and weave in the ends. Your puff stitch hot pad is ready.
