Heart Crochet Drawstring Bag Free Pattern + Videos

Turn two of my hit 3D Heart Squares into this lovely crochet drawstring bag! With some basic stitches, easy techniques, and video tutorials, even beginners will be able to make it.

Use it as a gift bag on Valentine’s Day, birthday, or simply keep your favorite bits and pieces inside. Pack it with lavender or scented filling and make a unique scent bag for your wardrobe.

3D Heart Crochet Drawstring Bag Free Pattern

It’s an intermediate project. The pattern is written in standard US terms. This pattern is a modification of the 3D Heart Granny Square.

To make this project, you will need two 3D Heart Granny Squares. The free crochet pattern and video tutorial are available in this post:

Materials and Tools

• Yarn: Hobbii Portobello, one skein (or leftovers) of each color of your choice. One skein is 120m/50g (131 yds/1.76 oz). The content of this yarn is 60% Cotton, 28% Acrylic, 12% Wool. I used the colors: Open Sea (79), Turkish Blue (88), Wild Berry (56), Antique Rose (53), Nougat (09), and Misty Green (113). You can use any other Worsted-weight yarn. 
• 3.5 mm crochet hook
• scissors
• yarn needle (optional)

Measurements

The bag is 13 cm tall and 9 cm wide (5.12 x 3.54 in). Your choice of yarn and hook, as well as the style of crocheting, may affect the size of the final product.

Stitches and Abbreviations

• ch – chain stitch
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• tr – treble crochet
• st – stitch
• ch-sp – chain space
• increase
• BLO – back loop only
• standing dc – standing double crochet, a type of chainless start to the round (explained in the video!)
• standing sc – standing single crochet, made just like standing dc, but without the yarn over
• C1, C2, C3 – different colors of yarn.

Workflow

First, work on the squares separately. Then, crochet an additional round and one additional row at the top of each square. Next, combine the squares by working through both of them at once, and use the same yarn to create a ruffle around the opening. The last step is making and weaving in the drawstrings.

Start

Prepare two 3D Heart Granny Squares using this free pattern.

Round 1

In C1. In my version, this round is yellow.

• Start in the top right corner of the square.
• Your first stitch is a standing double crochet (alternatively, you can change the first dc to 3 ch).
• Notice that there are double crochets at the top and the bottom, and half double crochets on the sides of the square. This creates a nicer, more elongated shape.

2 dc into the corner ch-sp, 10 dc, *2 dc, 2 ch, 2 hdc* in the corner ch-sp, 
10 hdc, *2 hdc, 2 ch, 2 dc* in the corner ch-sp, 
10 dc, *2 dc, 2 ch, 2 hdc* in the corner ch-sp, 
10 hdc, 2 hdc in the corner ch-sp, 2 ch, sl st.

Repeat in the second square. Cut the yarn.

Drawstring Row

In C2. In my version, this row is pink.

• Start in the top right corner of the square.
• Your first stitch is a standing double crochet (alternatively, you can change the first dc to 3 ch).

1 dc in the corner ch-sp, 14 dc, 1 dc in the corner ch-sp.

Repeat in the second square. Cut the yarn.

Join the Squares

In C3. In my version, this part is pastel green.

• Hold the squares facing the wrong sides towards each other.
• Start in the top left corner and work the stitches towards the bottom of the bag. Remember not to crochet over the bag opening.
• In this round, the stitches are worked through both squares. Align them symmetrically. Pay attention to the position of the heart.
• Your first stitch is standing single crochet (alternatively, you can attach the yarn and make 1 ch before working 5 sc).

5 sc through the edge double crochets in both squares (these dcs are horizontal from our point of view), 3 dc in the ch-sp, 14 sc blo (through the back loops of both squares), 3 sc in the corner ch-sp,

14 sc, 3 sc in the corner ch-sp, 

14 sc, 3 sc in the ch-sp, 5 sc in the edge dc.

Don’t cut the yarn; proceed to the ruffle unless you want it in a new color.

The Ruffle

Still in C3. In my version, this part is pastel green (continuing). This round is worked all around the opening of the bag.

4 ch, *2 tr in one st* x 30, 1 tr right next to the turning chain, sl st.

Cut the yarn and secure it. Turn the bag inside out, tie any loose yarn ends, and weave them in.

Drawstrings

Crochet two chains, roughly 30 cm (12 inches) each.

Weave them through the Drawstring Row all around in the sequence: under 2, over 1. Tie the ends together. Repeat the process in the opposite direction, so that you have ends sticking out on both sides of the bag. Tie the ends to secure them. 

The bag should close when pulling both drawstrings at once.
