Granny Square Bookmark Free Crochet Pattern
Turn a bunch of tiny granny squares into a lovely bookmark! This crochet pattern is all about using easy techniques to achieve beautiful effects. Depending on the colors you choose, you can make it playful, elegant, or whimsical, and match your reader’s personality.

About The Project
First, you need five or more granny squares, which we then combine using a seamless join called the mattress stitch. Once it’s done, we can add a simple single crochet border. Weave in the ends and enjoy your granny square bookmark!

Materials and Tools
- I used tiny amounts of Scheepjes Catona yarn – 100% mercerized cotton in assorted colors. I used colors 130, 512, 226, 173, 524, and 249. Use up any leftovers you have.
- crochet hook 2.5 mm
- scissors, and yarn needle
This combination of yarn and hook creates a really flat crochet piece, which is so important in bookmarks. Keep it in mind if you plan to substitute the yarn for another brand.
Measurements
- This granny bookmark is 4,5 cm (1.8 in) wide and 18 cm (7 in) long.
- Each granny square is roughly 3 x 3 cm (1.2 x 1.2 inches)
- You can change the length of the bookmark by adding more squares.

Crochet Granny Square Bookmark Free Pattern
Workflow
- Prepare 5 or more granny squares in assorted colors.
- Next, join them with an invisible mattress stitch, using a tapestry needle and scrap yarn.
- Add the border, hiding the yarn ends in the stitches.
- Weave in ends and steam-block the finished bookmark.
Granny Squares
Make 5 small granny squares using two colors for the first and only two rounds.
C1 | Start: Chain 4, create a loop, close it with a slip stitch.
C1 | Round 1: 2 ch, 2 dc, 2 ch, *3 dc, 2 ch* x 3, slip stitch into the second chain stitch.
We work the first two double crochets of the next round in the chain space behind the hook. They wrap around the turning chain, but it doesn’t affect the look of the final piece.
C2 | Round 2: 3 ch, 2 dc in the ch-sp behind the hook, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* in the next three ch-sp, *3 dc, 2 ch* in the last ch-sp, sl st.
Secure and weave in yarn ends.
Joining Granny Squares
Use short yarn strands and a tapestry needle to join your squares using the mattress stitch, which is an invisible type of join.
Notes
- When joining individual squares, include all six stitches on the side and one chain stitch from each corner. Seam them tightly, otherwise the border may buckle.
- Stack the squares on top of each other to figure out the color combination you like best.
- Leave the yarn ends on the sides – you will hide them inside the border as you go.
Border
You can start anywhere, but I recommend starting in the corner – attaching the yarn in color 1. Crochet over the yarn ends as you go.
Round 1: work 1 single crochet in each stitch, and *1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc* in each corner.
Working on the longer side of the bookmark goes like this:
Granny square one: 1 sc in the square corner, 6 sc in the stitches, 1 sc in the square corner, jump to the granny square number two, repeat: 1 sc in the square corner, 6 sc in the stitches, 1 sc in the square corner, and so on.
When you reach the corner of the bookmark, work *1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc* in the chain space.
Repeat all around the bookmark. Close the round by making a slip stitch in the first sc.
Round 2: 1 ch. Repeat round 1, but work the single crochets in the back loop only and the corner stitches normally, in the chain space. Close the round with a slip stitch.
It’s ready!
Tie, weave in and cut any yarn ends sticking out on the back. I highly recommend blocking the finished granny bookmark to even it out and make it slimmer.
