Woo-hoo! Part one of my winter-themed Mini CAL is here, so dive into the world of delicate crochet snowflakes and magical handmade ornaments.
To start off on the right note, the first pattern of this series is available in two sizes, which are very similar, but differ in the details. They will look lovely on your Christmas tree, as a garland, or used as a table decoration during this year’s festivities.

PATTERN NOTES
LEVEL – beginner
TERMS – standard US
TECHNIQUES
- chain (ch)
- single crochet (sc)
- treble crochet (tr)
- slip stitch (sl st)
MATERIALS AND TOOLS
- yarn: 100% cotton thread – I used an unpopular Polish one, but something like Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush should be ok, too!
- crochet hook 1.5 mm
- scissors
MEASUREMENTS
- big snowflake: circa 9 cm (3,55″)
- small snowflake: circa 8 cm (3,15″)
- remember that your yarn weight of choice, hook size and crocheting style can affect the final size of the ornament, as well as blocking and stiffening.

Big Crystal Star Crochet Snowflake

START:
chain 6, close with slip stitch.
ROUND 1:
chain 6, *2 tr into the loop, 2 ch* x 6, 1 tr, close with sl st.
ROUND 2:
chain 4, 4 tr in chain space, *10 ch, 5 tr in chain space* x 6, 10 ch, close with sl st.
IMPORTANT! In round 3 all single crochet stitches are worked in between treble crochet stitches, or in chain space. Why? You have 5 trebles from round two, but you need to work only 4 stitches in this row, so working in between them allows you to make it symmetrical.
ROUND 3:
chain 1, [*1 sc, 4 ch, 1 sc* in one st (between first and second treble), 2 sc, *1 sc, 4 ch, 1 sc* in one st (between second to last and last treble), *6 sc in the big chain space, 5 ch, 6 sc in the big chain space*] x 7, close with sl st.
Fasten off, secure the yarn, and don’t forget to block and stiffen your snowflakes!

Small Crystal Star Crochet Snowflake

START:
chain 6, close with slip stitch.
ROUND 1:
chain 6, *2 tr into the loop, 2 ch* x 6, 1 tr, close with sl st.
ROUND 2:
chain 4, 4 tr in chain space, *8 ch, 5 tr in chain space* x 6, 8 ch, close with sl st.
IMPORTANT! In round 3 all single crochet stitches are worked in between treble crochet stitches, or in chain space.
ROUND 3:
chain 1, [4 sc (between the trebles), *5 sc in the big chain space, 5 ch, 5 sc in the big chain space*] x 7, close with sl st.
Fasten off, secure the yarn, and don’t forget to block and stiffen your snowflakes! Remember, that blocking and stiffening is essential, because that’s what makes them look good. Don’t be intimidated by this, though – it’s easy!

you are done!
