3.5 mm crochet hook
scissors
yarn needle (optional)

Yarn

Yarn: Hobbii Portobello (60% Cotton, 28% Acrylic, 12% Wool).
For one square, I used about 5 g (0,18 oz) of yarn in total, so much less than one skein (which is 120 m per 50 g, or 131 yds per 1.76 oz) of each color.
You can use any other Worsted-weight yarn.
The colors I used: Open Sea (79), Wild Berry (56), Antique Rose (53), Nougat (09), and Misty Green (113).

Measurements

The square measures 8,5 x 8,5 cm (3,35 x 3,35 in). The final square size may differ depending on your crocheting style and the choice of yarn and hook size.

Stitches and Abbreviations

ch – chain stitch
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
st – stitch
ch-sp – chain space (the space between the clusters of double crochets, or under the chain)
C1 – the color of the heart
C2 – the color of the background
** and () – repeat

Heart Granny Square Free Crochet Pattern

To make this heart granny square crochet, we start with a chain loop or a magic ring. Then, we use double crochet stitches in clusters on each side of the square. Simultaneously, we use a contrasting yarn to create a heart shape. To finish off this crochet project, we border the granny square heart with a solid color. You can then continue making granny squares, join the squares together, or mix them with solid granny squares to make a bigger project.

C1 / Start

4 ch, create a loop, and slip stitch to close it. Note: You can make a magic circle, but I prefer a chain loop.

C1 / Round 1

2 ch, 2 dc, 2 ch, *3 dc, 2 ch* x 3, slip stitch into the second chain stitch.

Note: Counterintuitively, we will work the first two double crochets of each next round in the chain space behind the hook. They wrap around the turning chain, but it’s unnoticeable.

C1 / Round 2

3 ch, 2 dc in the ch-sp behind the hook, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* in the next three ch-sp, *3 dc, 2 ch* in the last ch-sp, sl st.

Note: Read this article to learn how to change colors in crochet. To avoid loose yarn on the back of your work, crochet over the strand of unused color.

C1 and C2 / Round 3

Start with C1, 3 ch, 2 dc in the ch-sp behind the hook, change to C2, 3 dc in the ch-sp, change to C1, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* all in the corner ch-sp, 3 dc in the next ch-sp, change to C2, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* all in the corner ch-sp, change to C1, 3 dc in the next ch-sp, change to C2, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* all in the corner ch-sp, change to C1, 3 dc in the next ch-sp, *3 dc, 2 ch* in the last ch-sp, sl st.

C2 / Round 4

3 ch, 2 dc in the ch-sp behind the hook, (3 dc, 3 dc, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* all in the corner ch-sp) x 3, 3 dc, 3 dc, *3 dc, 2 ch* in the last ch-sp, sl st.

Fasten off, cut the yarn, and weave in the yarn ends. You can block your finished crochet square.
