- yarn: 100% cotton thread – you can use Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 Crochet Thread, Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush, or any thread of similar weight.
- crochet hook 1.5 mm
- scissors
Measurements
- 10,5 cm (4.13″)
Remember that your yarn weight of choice, hook size, and crocheting style can affect the final size of the ornament. Blocking and stiffening are crucial to make it look good.
Important Notes
The last round of this project can be done in two ways, creating two different effects, as shown below. The first five rounds remain the same in both versions.
START
magic ring (click for the tutorial)
ROUND 1
18 sc, 1 sl st into the first stitch to close the round.
ROUND 2
2 ch, skip 1 st, 1 dc, *5 ch, dc2tog with 1 st skipped between them* x 5, 5 ch, 1 sl st into the first dc (top of the ∆ shape).
ROUND 3
*1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc* all into the ch-sp, repeat x 6, sl st into the first sc.
ROUND 4
1 ch, (3 ch, *1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dtr, 5 ch, 1 dtr, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc* all in one ch-sp, 3 ch, 1 sc between the snowflake arms) x 6.
ROUND 5
*2 sc into the nearest ch-sp, 1 sc between the tall stitches (3 sc in total), (1 hdc, 2 ch, 3 dc, 5 ch, 3 dc, 2 ch, 1 hdc) all into the big ch-sp, 1 sc between the tall stitches (3 sc in total), 2 sc into the ch-sp* x 6. Always start the sequence in the next ch-sp. 1 sl st into the sc from the previous round.
ROUND 6 – VERSION A
6 sl st until you reach the small ch-sp between the hdc and dcs, *2 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc* all in the small ch-sp, 1 sc between the dcs [2 sc in total], (4 sc, 3 ch, 4 sc) all into the big ch-sp, 1 sc between the dcs [2 sc in total], (2 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc) all in the small ch-sp, 5 ch* x 6, 1 sl st into the first sc on the next snowflake arm.
ROUND 6 – VERSION B
6 sl st until you reach the small ch-sp between the hdc and dcs, *2 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc* all in the small ch-sp, 1 sc between the dcs [2 sc in total], (4 sc, 3 ch, 4 sc) all into the big ch-sp, 1 sc between the dcs [2 sc in total], (2 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc) all in the small ch-sp, 2 ch, 1 dc between the sc’s from the previous round, 2 ch* x 6, 1 sl st into the first sc on the next snowflake arm.
Cut the yarn and weave in ends, or add a hanging loop by crocheting a chain of your desired length and slip-stitching it to the base.
Block and stiffen your snowflake. Remember to pin every arm of the snowflake and every picot in place to achieve a regular and even look.
